Curriculum Vitae

Carsten Mann is Post-doc and Deputy Head of the Innovation in Governance Research Group at the Center for Technology and Society (ZTG) and the Institute for Sociology (IfS) at the Technische Universität Berlin.

A forest and environmental scientist, Carsten Mann has specialised in society and economics. Between 1995 and 2001, he studied forest and environmental sciences at the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg and the Oregon State University Corvallis. He completed his PhD, which was financed by the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, in 2006 at the Institute of Forest and Environmental Policy in Freiburg, submitting his thesis on conflict analysis as a basis to developing environmentally sound management strategies.

Since 2001, Carsten Mann has been carrying out research on national and international strategies for nature conservation and on governance structures for sustainable development. From 2007 until 2009, he worked with Cemagref in France in the rural area economies section. There, he focused on methods for institutional compatibility assessment for the implementation of EU environmental and agricultural policies in local contexts, as well as on policy recommendations for rural development, such as themes of energy policy and eco-systems services.

His research interest focuses on the relation between society and eco-systems. Therefore policy and governance research approaches are combined with those of social-ecological and sustainability research. Particularly the transfer of scientific results concerning human impact on natural systems in policy and management practice is of central interest. In this context, methods of scenario building and evaluation, such as future workshops and foresight, are developed and applied.

Carsten Mann was member of the political satire group "Die Kettwichte," performing about 120 times at national and international venues. He has organised and participated in various art exhibitions in the Ruhr region, doing photography and working with video installations. Playing with his son, the guitar, travelling and the outdoors are his spare time activities.
