Curriculum Vitae

Jan-Peter Voß is head of the Innovation in Governance Research Group at the Institute for Sociology and coordinator of the Governance Cluster at the Center for Technology and Society of the Technische Universität Berlin.

He trained as a political and social scientist, focusing on science and technology studies. From 1992 until 1999, he studied political science and economics at the Freie Universität Berlin and at the London School of Economics and Political Science. In 2007, he received his doctorate from the University of Twente with a thesis on the interplay of design and dynamics in governance, analysed by historical case studies on emissions trading and network access regulation in utilities as emerging policy instruments.

Since 1999 Jan-Peter Voß has researched into topics of governance, innovation and sustainability. Until 2009, he led a number of research projects at the Öko-Institut e.V., among others on energy and climate policy, liberalisation and regulation of utilities, innovation policy, technology assessment, politics and governance of sustainable development, and methods of transdisciplinary research.

His current research interest is on the relation between politics, knowledge and innovation. For this he combines approaches from policy and governance studies with those from science and technology studies. Ongoing research work can be grouped as follows:

  • Dynamics of science and technology
Dynamics of innovation, social and institutional innovation, technology development, emerging sciences, transformation of socio-technical systems, foresight
  • Governance of innovation
Research and innovation policies, innovation policy for social innovations, constructive technology assessment, transition management
  • Innovation in governance
Emergence and development of new forms of governance, development and spread of policy instruments, policy convergence, technologies of governance
  • Politics and governance for sustainable development
Shaping societal transformation, coping with ambivalent goals, uncertain knowledge and distributed power, transdisciplinary research, reflexive governance

Jan-Peter Voß is one of the speakers for the Politics, Science and Technology Working Group of the German Association for Political Science (DVPW), member of the German Sociological Society (DGS), the Society for Science and Technology Studies in Germany (GWTF), and the European Association for the Study of Science and Society (EASST).
